Today I'm making rosemary-lemon holiday cookies, somewhat inspired by this recipe, but I'm using lemon powder and Maine pine bitters. The dough tastes good, at least. It's currently chilling in the fridge before I attempt to roll it out and cut little evergreen trees. Cutout cookies are not what I do best, but rosemary cookies just deserve that shape.

EDIT 12/22/25 -- The cookies are done! \o/ They turned out quite delicious. The first bite just tastes like sugar cookie, but then the lemon and pine flavors bloom. Rosemary cookies are tricky to balance. Too sweet and they're just sugar cookies, not sweet enough and they taste like crackers; too little rosemary and they're sugar cookies again, too much and it tastes like you're baking with floor wash. But these are perfect.

1. We finished another puzzle already. This was a super cute design but I think it's too easy for us. We did both work on it a fair bit (often it's mostly me with Carla only doing a bit here and there), so it went fast, but also having each cat so distinct made it very easy to separate out pieces. It was fun, though!

2. Carla wanted to make spritz cookies but we don't have any almond extract. After trying two stores earlier today with no luck, we were finally able to get some tonight at a third store. And bonus, that store had McConnell's peppermint ice cream, which is one of the best peppermint ice creams I've ever had, so we got some of that, too.

3. I went in to work this morning and meant to stay through my afternoon meeting at 3:30, but then another meeting got put in from 4-5 and I didn't want to be driving home that late as it would take longer, so I came home earlier in the afternoon and took both meetings from home (they were both web meetings anyway).

4. We fiiiiinally got confirmation that we can pick the car up tomorrow morning! It's been two and a half weeks! D:

5. I got my new shoes today and they fit, so that confirms the original ones I bought in the store were a wide. It's very frustrating that it doesn't say that anywhere on the tag, but I will remember for next time for sure now.

6. Spotted this cutie Molly in the cat house the other night. She usually doesn't go in there!

Don't mind me, just over here. Doing an RSS thing.  :)   But, look! A plan!

So I was talking to @shivver, who mentioned the part in the DW Christmas special with Clara and Danny: the really heartwarming bit that's actually a dream.  (I found the transcript).  Well, that got part of my brain going and I latched onto the part about the dream and how I could integrate that here.

This is v rough, but ...

1. Open in Dark Castle
2. B is trying to get the castle ready for the midwinter festivities )it wouldn't exactly be Christmas, most fanfic writers use things like solstice or just a midwinter celebration).  R doesn't see the need since he isn't much for celebrating .
3.  B in contrast loves it- her favorite time of year.  She just wants thing s to be perfect.
4.  R just  snaps back  about what he  really wants right now )her work done),  and teleports/zaps her away.
5.  B  , thinking she is alone ,  talks to herself later in her room, wishing the perfect  celebration
DREAM!

IN the dream, the Castle is  decorated like something out of a Christmas card, thanks to magic.  R is.. uncharacteristically pleasant to her. They share a warm drink and eventually dance together , with music seemingly coming from the air  and the obligatory hand kiss. <3  They just enjoy each other and there's beautiful shimmering snowflakes  falling outside...

B awakens to R's voice , calling her from the great hall.  She wonders if all of it was a dream, when finding a tiny spark of something next ot her cup of tea.
(and unbeknowst to them both,  the dream was caused by a figure like Morpheus / the Sandman)

This poem is spillover from the June 3, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] see_also_friend. It also fills the "Rainbow" square in my 6-2-25 card for the Pride Fest Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred. It belongs to the series Peculiar Obligations.

What Would It Take to Approve a Housing Permit in 24 Hours?

In its Housing-Ready City Toolkit, Strong Towns recommended a 24-hour turnaround for permits. That's not an exaggeration.

Today is cloudy and cool.

I fed the birds.  I put out a new suet cake.  I've seen a huge flock of mostly sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 12/22/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 12/22/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 12/22/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 12/22/25 -- I filled the trolley twice with berry-laden twigs from the brushpile in the parking lot, and put those in the firepit.

I saw the great horned owl fly from somewhere near the parking lot into the trees around ritual meadow.  I heard woodpeckers squeaking but didn't see them.

EDIT 12/22/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

It's the winter holiday season, for one holiday or another, in much of the Western world at least. Whereas we usually picture the holidays as a happy, festive time, it also often comes with some amount of conflict, since no one gets along with everyone 100% of the time.

Today's challenge is to write a bit of conflict. It doesn't have to be major or physical, though it could be. It doesn't have to be between two people; internal conflict is fine as well. Some ideas:

* You're arguing with yourself over whether or not to have another piece of pie.
* Two characters with different ideas of what present to buy a third person.
* One character doing something inconsiderate/offensive to another and that person fighting back.

The end is here! Of the challenge, that is. Even if you only got a few words written or spent some time thinking about your projects, I hope you enjoyed the process.

With just a week and change left until start, we wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that participants are eligible for some awards!

For anyone that shares fanworks, banners boasting a numerical summary of your contributions are available. Currently, we can host up to nine unique types of fanwork per banner. If you manage to create more than that, let us know and we will work with you to create a banner you're satisfied with.

For those who try something new with their fannish expression, you can request as many first medium tokens as desired. They will include your name of choice and whatever first [medium] you request (provided it's under ten characters long), be it fic, gifs, vids, meta, fanfoods, crafts, or anything else!

Finally, for anyone who completes a punch card, you may request a "punch out" sticker token that you can paste onto your banner, other tokens, icons, or wherever else you desire. Reminder that both commenters and creators are both eligible for punch card awards.

All awards can be requested upon event conclusion by filling out the Summary Form. They will be delivered as swiftly as possible and in order of request. Questions, comments, concerns? Comment on this post or send us an email at bagfishbang@gmail.com.

Feel free to join our community and/or follow us on tumblr [tumblr.com profile] bag-bang. We hope you join us for this round of Be a Goldfish!
