1. Dear Eric: My daughter-in-law decided a few years back to have a Friendsgiving dinner which she hosts a couple of weekends before Thanksgiving. She invites her family (as her mom has never done Thanksgiving) and then a bunch of her and my son's friends.

In my mind I know this shouldn't bother me, but it does. I waited my "turn" growing up and having a family and to be the one to host Thanksgiving (my parents have both passed as has my husband's mom) and now I have my own grandchildren. We still do the whole Thanksgiving dinner, but I don't feel it is as special as it was because now everyone has already had the traditional Thanksgiving meal that previously we only had that one time a year.

She always says “oh y’all are welcome to come, too,” but I just can't get into it and feel resentment that I waited all the years to be the grandma to host the meal and now it is like feeding everyone leftovers. Can you give me another way to look at this or some advice that will make me not as resentful about it?

– Leftovers Anyone?

2. Dear Annie: Christmas at my parents' house used to feel magical, but lately it feels like I'm walking into a performance review. My older brother's new hobby is "radical honesty," and apparently the holidays are his favorite time to practice. Last year, as we decorated the tree, he announced that my handmade ornaments looked "like a Pinterest fail" and suggested I "sit out the creative parts" of Christmas.

He says he's only being truthful and that any discomfort is "my issue to examine." My parents beg me not to make waves because he's "working on himself," but his self-work is coming at my expense.

I don't want to blow up Christmas, but I also don't want another holiday spent swallowing my feelings while he unloads his. How do I keep the peace without letting his "honesty" ruin the season? -- Silent Night No More

This was a much better day than yesterday!

1. Gaming Dice: It's a six-sided die. It's half-transparent green and half deep, dark amber and there's blue sparkles on top of both sides

2. Diamine Inkvent: Chameleon ink called Ambience. It's a really pretty orange ink overlaid with pink sparkles

3. Cult Pens: Pilot Supergrip G retractable ballpoint in neon orange, with neon orange ink. Very cool! And fun that the ink calendar and this one matched today. Cost: $1.90. Total Cost: $109.38

4. Cacao & Cardamom: Hazelnut Crunch. Basically clusters of chocolate covered hazelnuts. Yum!

Povitica - noun.

Povitica (pronounced "poh-vee-TEET-sah" in Croatian, or "poh-TEET-sah" as potica in Slovenian) is a traditional Eastern European sweet or savory nut roll bread characterized by a very thin, yeast-raised dough.

A rich filling, usually finely ground walnuts, honey and/or sugar, is spread inside and then rolled into a tight spiral. Learn how to make it yourself below:

1) In my last post I shared an article about dynamic grocery pricing, and how this was likely to hurt some who could least afford it. The issue of dynamic pricing leaped out to me in this article about Disney's shift to being a luxury experience. The author wrote:

"Over my three-decade-long consulting career, I saw industry after industry use this kind of information to shift their focus to the big spenders in its customer base. Banks, retailers, hotels, airlines, credit card issuers, manufacturers and universities all learned that their richest customers didn’t just spend more than the rest; they spent multiples more. Many companies found that if they didn’t focus on their richest customers, they couldn’t provide competitive salaries to staff members, increase returns to shareholders and attract capital to invest in new products. Whereas in the 1970s and before, the revenue driving corporate profits came from the middle class, by the 1990s it was clear that the big money was at the top."

At the same time, just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's any good. Read more... )

3) Saw the Pixar movie Elio and can see why it didn't do well. It's a take on The Wizard of Oz but was too focused on its theme and message to develop some of the other important aspects. Read more... )

4) [personal profile] greenfinch posted about a study on pop music showing a darker and more stressed turn in music. I had some issues with it. Read more... )

5) First posted at [community profile] tv_talk, a Bloomberg News article discussing how sports acquisition will be the big driver to streaming services listed the biggest months for signups during 2025 to Apple+. The top 4 were all connected to MLB games leading with Dodgers vs. Yankees (May) 722K. The top series program was 'The Morning Show' with 524K. Slow Horses didn't make the Top 10 list, but then the data stopped in September, and its new season premiere was in October.

It's clear that Slow Horses is hugely popular as a streaming show. But apparently Morning Show is as well but isn't discussed nearly as much. Its writing is also very strong, it has a large cast, and some big names in the mix. Having just seen its 4th season, I can say it is also not slowing down in any way. If anything, the personal stakes for all the characters just keep going up.

To me, the most riveting episode was 4.8 The Parent Trap. The juxtaposition of Alex and Cory's polar opposites in parenting certainly made suggestions about how and why they turned out as they did, but it also connected to how the finale resolved the season. Spoilers )

Someone on my flist, [personal profile] shipperslist, is doing BooksandLaLa's reading challenges this year. I posted them here last year with every intention of doing it and then I promptly forgot. But, guys!? Guess what? I just went through the list again and I COMPLETED THE COVER CHALLENGE!!!! I didn't event mean to and I totally did it. Now, this is only because the Challenge creator says she doesn't actually care what month you read the books in. Also, I'm including one book on my list that I dnf'd, but who knows, maybe I'll pick it up and finish it before the end of the year!

So, here's the Cover Challenge (All of these things need to be pictured on the cover of the book) and the books I read that fulfilled the challenge

January: Pattern --MEN AT ARMS
February: Skyline --VICTORY OF EAGLES
March: Books --PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION (This is the one I dnf'd)
April: Animals --A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES
May: Eyes --DAWN
June: Celestial --THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE
July: Technology --THE SONG OF ACHILLES
August: Transportation --HIS MAJESTY'S DRAGON
September: Foliage --LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE
October: Weapons --BLACK POWDER WAR
November: Food & Drink --WEYWARD
December: Monochromatic --BEAUTYLAND

This makes me so happy! I've never finished a book reading challenge before!

This makes me think I should make a more concerted effort to try next years challenge, which is as follows:

TITLE CHALLENGE (All these things need to be in the title of the book)

January: "Before" and "After"
February: Keyboard keys (letters, numbers, punctuation, enter, esc, space, tab, etc)
March: "This" and "That" also "Those" and "These"
April: Ordinal Numbers (First, second, third, fourth, etc --also "last" or "final")
May: "Make" also "Makes" and "Making"
June: One-Word title
July: Occupations
August: Groups & Clubs (also includes names of clubs, leagues, societies, etc)
September: "Me" "My" "Mine"
October: Parts of a house (Not furniture, structural)
November: Instructional Title
December: Superlatives (Best, Worst, Funniest, Brightest, etc)

COVER CHALLENGE (All these things need to be on the cover of the book)

January: Internal Body Parts (includes blood)
February: Silhouette
March: Action/Movement
April: (wearable) accessories
May: Border/Frame (around the whole cover)
June: Wings
July: A metallic element (Must obviously be metallic, not just yellow or gray)
August: Damage (Books with covers that look damaged some way in the picture, not actual damage to the book)
September: Fire & Smoke
October: Doors & Keys (also locks)
November: Reflection (graphic elements that are reflected)
December: Music (includes instruments)

Excited to see what I can come up with for next year!

Assortment of black and white speech bubbles

Welcome to the weekly roundup post! What are you watching this week? What are you excited about?
Saturday, December 20th, 2025 07:25
I hit Price Chopper, the Bakery, and Agway while I was downtown. I got GCs from Marshall’s (Price Chopper was out, so no points *sad face*), the local diner and a local pizza place, as well. (I also picked up a BK GC for Addy, which I hope she's tickled with.)

I visited mom, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I put a chuck roast in the crock pot before I left the house this morning. (If the crock pot is the greatest invention ever, the bags that go inside the crock pot have to be the second best. I love them! They make clean-up so much easier.)

I typed in my second [community profile] fandomtrees fic, gave it a re-read and edit, then got it coded and posted to AO3!! I’m very excited. I’d like to write one more; two if I have the time (and mental energy). I stopped in to see my used bookstore friends because I still had to drop off their card. We had a nice chat. AND I watched another ep of The Pitt. Secrets of the Zoo was my evening background tv.

Temps started out at 53.1(F) and pretty much started dropping from there. It was 39 at noon. We certainly had the expected rain in the morning. At one point it was coming down hard AND the wind was blowing it horizontal. I got soaked walking into Agway. The rain turned to snow about noon, then stopped altogether about an hour later. But there’s more in the forecast, just not any accumulation, which I appreciate.

I thought the warmer temps and rain would get rid of all the snow/ice left, but it did not. The ‘ice’ is currently slushy so easy to walk on because it gives, but once the temps drop it’s going to be slick. Thank goodness for my Yaktrax!

Mom was doing okay when I visited. more back here )

26 things in 2026. (See the challenge from 2025.)

Anyone who wants to play, just make your list before January 1, 2026. You don't have to post the list. But maybe show it to someone else so you can tell them you've done a thing.  Goals can be big or small, same kind of thing or different things, whatever inspires you to get stuff done.

The challenge will begin on January 1, 2026 and end on December 31, 2026.

You can play here, since this community gathers people interested in goals and resolutions, or in your own blog. Make a post in your blog like "I signed up for the 26 Things in 26 challenge in [community profile] goals_on_dw." That's also a good place to keep track of what you accomplish. Then make a tag for it like "26 Things in 2026" and put that on the post; it should stick that way. Check your Interests page to see if you have 2026, Challenges, Goals, Tasks, To Do List, etc. listed there, which helps people find you. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.
