Disappointing Birthdays not mine, Mom's. She needs to learn to say no to people (namely the couple I dislike who invited themselves to dinner and volunteered mom and her car to go pick up her BFF, the aunt to the woman of the couple) She was barely home and I had to go to dinner with them.

Where did we go? To Harrigan's a bar/restaurant with the subject line sign on the door. It does however have really good food and gives you a lot of it for low cost. At least there was that and I FINALLY got my blood thinners approved so I left dinner early to get them and my insulin.

Finally edited and posted my last Hazbin story to [community profile] fandomtrees so there's that.

I've been sulking most of the day so there's that too.

I have a holiday special for fannish 50

Betty sent me This delight : Watch ILM Recreate the Death Star Trench Run Out of Virtual Gingerbread

I'm sure I've mentioned Hazbin Hotel is a musical (I KNOW. I don't like them much so I have no explanation for this) Sam Haft (the composer) and Blake Roman (voice actor of Angel Dust and the egg bois) jokingly said if the sound track made the Billboard Top 100 Sam would come up with music and Blake would sing Christmas songs as Frank the egg boi. Well It hit the top 100 and Blake's Losing Streak went to #14. So have two songs

And the first one has Alex Brightman (who sings Beetlejuice on Broadway and voices Sir Pentious (who is first in the song) joining Blake.

And here, have the song that enabled the above

And Star Rect has another one out

and the original

Day 23's tea - Creme Brulee Black Tea: black teas, crème brulee flavoring, and marigold petals. It's not bad. I've bought this one previously. It's less caramelized sugar and cream and more amaretto

I forget earlier, but I just added a screen shot of the icons to the Challenge 30 voting post. In case anyone wasn't able to view the Imgur icon links. Voting will be open until Thursday. There are a few ties currently, so more voters would be great. Thanks! 🙂

Going early with this because of the holiday. 2018, how many (few) did I see?

SEVEN?! Okay, 3 of these were son's fault.

~ Love, Simon - I wound up unironically loving the way this played out. May have teared up a bit.
~ Solo: A Star Wars Story - Had been on the fence, fell for both Val and L3-37, GO ME FOR PICKING THE DOOMED ONES.
~ Venom - I had not kept up with comics, but I swear this version is almost like if every time The Maxx had been talking to himself, he'd been two people. I really did enjoy the film.

~ Bumblebee - LOL, I only just watched this in the past year. Twice. I really wish I had not waited but GO CHARLIE!
~ Aquaman - So I saw the reunion scene between Tom and Atlanna, and it hit my RexSoka buttons, so I watched it. Liked it a lot more than I had Wonder Woman!
~ Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - OMG, so freaking awesome! I LOVE THIS FILM.

and my fave:
~ Black Panther - So this is where I fell back in love with some of the MCU again. There's not a Wakandan I don't love, even the antagonists. This made me give a damn about the BP property in ways I had not thought possible, and proves that you have to have the right creative effort leaders!

If I get all the ideas out of my head, then I'll be able to write a mini-promo post for the fandom that doesn't just consist of a couple of screenshots with me pointing and screeching, right?

...Right?! 😨

I did my last teaching of the year last week, I had meetings with four separate students today — and no more 1:1 meetings remaining — and I just have one half-day of work remaining for 2025. Between work and illness, I feel almost flattened with exhaustion, so it's a real relief to have my upcoming holiday almost in touching distance.

Today's December talking meme prompt is from [personal profile] lokifan, favourite places to visit around Cambridge.

I could talk about so many, but I will limit myself to three(ish), in three different categories. You'll get lots of guides to Cambridge highlighting the beautiful old colleges and grounds, the standard walk out to the village of Grantchester along the river, punting tours and so on, so I'll stay off this beaten track.

My favourite museum/gallery in Cambridge is Kettle's Yard, which is a contemporary art gallery with a difference. It started out as the home of Jim and Helen Ede, art collectors, who hosted frequent open house events for students to view and tour their collection, and was later gifted by the Edes to the university. Now, the former living space is preserved essentially as it was — filled with objects from the Edes' collection, plus lots of lovely indoor plants — and students can come in and use it as a quiet study space. Other visitors to the gallery get a guided tour of the space, and then can move on to the extension, which is an exhibition space displaying temporary exhibitions. It's an absolutely beautiful, jewel-like little oasis of calm, and rewards return visits. This is a photoset of photos I took there many years ago.

My favourite outdoor space in Cambridge was somewhere I discovered serendipitously during the first days of the pandemic lockdown in early 2020. I had leapt into working from home with enthusiasm, and had deliberately built a whole bunch of routines into the day out of a mistaken fear that Matthias and I would be stressed or irritated or find things monotonous, and one such deliberate routine was my obsession with having short walks outside after lunch, to ensure we moved and saw the sunlight. One day, I made a spontaneous decision to go down a little street I'd never ventured before, and I ended up, quite literally, in Paradise (Nature Reserve). This is Paradise. We had lived with this beautiful, green, jungly place just around the corner from us for eight years and had never known. For the last year we lived in that little house under the ivy, it became a favourite spot. Walking into it was like inhaling deeply.

Foodwise, my favourite high-end places are this one (entirely vegetarian tasting menus; they also have a wonderful newsletter that gathers together curated links on all things foodie, crafty, cultural and local), this one (seafood), and this one, and in general I love the Mill Road area, which is home to two of the previously linked restaurants, but also a great cocktail bar, some excellent cheaper restaurants and takeaway places, and all the Asian, Eastern European, South Asian, Middle Eastern etc grocery stores in the city.

It was a good place to live — and it became more interesting, especially in a culinary sense, during the thirteen years that I lived there.

A few months (?) ago, Discord updated on my computer and promptly stopped working. [It would technically launch, but the program window was just a blank rectangle.) Subsequent updates (which happen pretty much every time I relaunch my browser) installed cheerfully enough and made no difference. I grumpily chalked it up to not having updated my OS in ages (I'm very resistant, but usually enough things eventually get creaky or stop working that I give in and get [personal profile] scruloose to update the system), and since Discord was still working on my phone, I figured that was that for the foreseeable future.

Then a couple of days ago, I let Discord install its newest update...and suddenly everything worked again. o_o I certainly wasn't going to complain, but it surprised me enough that I mentioned it to Kas on the weekend, and having just dealt with some Discord shenaniganry himself, he had an answer: Discord has decided it doesn't play nicely with some VPN locations, and I had happened to change my location setting to one it liked.

I mostly lurk on Discord, but there are a couple where I make tentative attempts at being social, and my dislike of typing more than a sentence or two at a time on my phone meant I was even quieter than usual for a while there, so this is a good development. But also, WTF, Discord.

Did I forget to mention the new-to-me Christmas ice cream here? It looks like I did.

A local ice creamery (Dee Dee's) does Advent calendars, which I had largely forgotten about until I saw mention of it on Bluesky, at which point I was safe from ordering one (too late!), but it got me to look at their seasonal flavors. Next thing I knew, I was asking [personal profile] scruloose to stop at a local-groceries shop that carries their ice creams, because I had to know what the chicken bones* flavor was like.more about that, plus a cheese stash )

I hit Walmart and Price Chopper while I was downtown. I also had a meeting at the funeral home, and later went to the nursing home to retrieve my aunt’s personal items. (They’ve ‘lost’ her wedding ring, which irritates me. I don’t know what I can do about it; it was listed on the inventory of personal items when she arrived, but didn’t go to the funeral home with her.)

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I roasted a chicken (with mashed potatoes and corn) for supper. So good!

I read fanfic and watched an ep of The Pitt. Dr. Pol was my background tv in the evening.

Temps started out at 20.8(F) and reached 32.9 (that I saw). There was some sun, which made driving in the car nice, but not walking the dogs. o_O
